Foggia is the city at the center of the Tavoliere delle Puglie, a sun-kissed area with a rich and glorious past, witnessed by the palaces, churches and monuments of different eras and styles. From its strategic position you can reach not only the Gargano National Park and some of the most enchanting beaches in Italy but also Potenza, Campobasso, Isernia, Barletta, Andria and Trani.

Immerse yourself in the history of the city from top to bottom: from the height of the fascinating Art Nouveau, Baroque and Rationalist buildings to the urban hypogea, from the peak of the Gargano promontory to the depths of the sea of the Baia delle Zagare. A territory rich in history, culture, sea and gastronomy awaits you.

Historic Center

Passing by Piazza Cavour and its Fontana del Sele, visiting the Civic Museums full of ancient finds and works, admiring the Palazzo dell’Acquedotto or della Dogana, home to the Galleria di Arte Moderna e Contemporanea, attending the shows of the Teatro Umberto Giordano richly decorated in neoclassical style and exploring the itinerary between the rationalist architecture in the historic center of Foggia, it will be possible to get in touch with the soul of the city and retrace the transformations of different eras.

But to fully experience the traditions of the place it is essential to abandon yourself to the charm and origins of the many churches: from the Norman Cathedral to the Church of the Crosses, the fragrant and colorful Mercato Rosati, heritage of the city home to the International Agricultural Fair, the mysterious and legendary urban hypogea, or the relaxing Karol Wojtyla urban park, the second largest municipal villa in Italy.

Gargano National Park

The “spur of Italy” occupies only 1% of the Italian territory and yet it hosts almost 90% of the national biodiversity. The landscape is also uniquely varied: you can alternate experiences in immense forests, seaside villages, wonderful beaches, white cliffs and stacks, passing from the green heart of the Umbra Forest to the coastal lakes, from the over 1000 meters of altitude of Monte Calvo to the clear and white beaches such as Baia delle Zagare, Pizzomunno or Mattinatella. In this lush vegetation, perhaps the densest in southern Italy, there are the towns that have preserved their ancient structure, with winding alleys and white houses: Vieste, San Menaio, Mattinata, including the only place in Italy where the sun rises and sets in the sea: Peschici.

The Tremiti Islands

The Tremiti Islands are located in the province of Foggia, reachable in a day from the port of Vieste. The only Italian archipelago in the Adriatic Sea is made up of five islands: San Domino, the largest and most beautiful from a landscape and naturalistic point of view, from which you can visit by boat the Bue Marino, Viole and Rondinelle caves that surround the island, not to be missed by diving enthusiasts; San Nicola, considered an open-air museum, full of historical monuments of the islands; Capraia, without trees or buildings, but covered with grass and flowers, destination and home to a vast colony of seagulls; Cretaccio, a large rock that acts as a natural bridge between San Domino and San Nicola; Pianosa, which hosts the natural reserve of the Marine Park, a heritage habitat of fish and crustaceans that live protected at different depths and that, together with the algal formations and historical wrecks, make the underwater panorama of rare beauty, ideal for scuba diving, without forgetting the numerous paths for those who love snorkeling.

Lucera:

Known for its Swabian-Angevin fortress and its Augustan amphitheater, among the oldest in southern Italy. Lucera's artistic treasure is not limited to the Cathedral and the historic buildings in the center, but also takes into consideration its structure and its naturalistic beauties that can be observed from the panoramic position that dominates the Tavoliere delle Puglie on three hills.

Manfredonia:

With a historic center full of small shops where you can buy typical artisan products, Manfredonia is a town built by order of the King of Sicily, Manfredi, from whom it took its name and which still hosts a vast historical heritage.

Typical cuisine:

Baked goods are a cornerstone of Foggia cuisine given that the province is one of the main producers of Italian wheat. In tradition, therefore, you can't miss acquasale, taralli, scaldatelli, pizzas and focaccias topped with tomatoes, onions and locally produced vegetables. Among the ones we can certainly remember the orecchiette with turnip tops and the cavatelli seasoned with fish. It is especially the mussels, oysters, shellfish and the presence of an excellent local fish that make the second courses excellent and imaginative. It is also obligatory to point out the presence of DOP branded cheeses such as Canestrato di Puglia and caciocavallo silano. The excellent oil of the territory (especially the Dauno DOP extra virgin olive oil) makes every dish exquisite and tasty. Finally, you can't miss a glass of good wine such as Aleatico di Puglia, San Severo, Orta Nova, Tavoliere delle Puglie and Cacc'e Mmitte di Lucera.
